Parametric pavillion assembly

Between 20 and 24th of July Faculty of Architecture of Technical University of Wrocław together with LabDigiFab and Jawor Design Studio hosted parametric design workshop (already mentioned before in this article ). Over five days participants gradually learned three different design environments : Generative Components, Grasshopper and Processing. On first day Przemek Jaworski introduced everyone into basic techniques of associative and hierarchical geometry, building three dimensional models of facades, roof and stairs, in order to prepare them for digital fabrication process. Exercises were prefaced with special lecture preparing the ground for entry into the world of digital design approaches.

On day two, another lecture was presented by Mateusz Zwierzycki, followed by few very interesting exercies, leading everyone through basic techniques in Rhino Grasshopper. This task was then continued by Michał Piasecki, creating model of architectural facade built on Voronoi tesselation. On next day it was 3d printed on FDM printer in white ABS plastic (photos below)..

Third day started from presentation explaining some generatve designs by Michał Piasecki, and then continued with introduction to algorithmic design led by Przemek Jaworski. Rest of the day was focused on Processing and programming of non-linear ways of generating geometry. At the end, participants were introduced in detail into design of the pavillion, focusing on workflow and sequence of techniques used – dynamic relaxation, adaptive distribution of nodes (connection topologies) and digital fabrication preparation.

Day after (Saturday) after short briefing, we rushed to the battle. All nodes and connections were laid out flat on the grass according to numbering, using white thread and poles we marked our ‘coordinate system’, and positioned all 12 base points on the ground. In the meantime, we also assembled 3 main bottom pieces of entire thing. After securing them to the base, we continued the assembly all the way to the top.

To everyone’s surprise the assembly was finished after only few hours, which was probably helped by clear numbering of all nodes and interactive 3d model with node connections stored on nearby laptops in 3D PDF file (available for download here: pawilon 3d model siatka pol.pdf).

The task of physical model assembly was intended to strenghten the understanding of techniques used in design, such as : dynamic relaxation, topological optimization, parametric structures of nodes and digital fabrication preparation.

The day was finished with exhibition of other digitally fabricated models (from LabDigiFab repository) and final evening party (sponsored by Bentley!).

Day 5 (Sunday) was mainly filled with Q&A sessions and additional presentations (in english) by:

- Maria Śmigielska (Spring Challenge 2012 workshops in Vienna)

- Marcin Gładzik (Shape To Fabrication 2011 / London)

- Dawid Górny (interactive installations and own projects – Netizens advertising agency)

- Michail Georgiou (University of Nicosia, Cyprus, teaching experience and workshops)

    Great work!

    Could you tell me approximately how many square meters or square feet of plywood were used for this?

    Hi,
    I used about 9-10 sheets of 1250x2500mm, which gives roughly 25 square meters. Plywood was 15mm thick. 4 days of CNC work :-)
